Part 2 of 4: Snake Safety- Recognize
Yesterday was why. Today is where and when. You cannot dodge a snake you never see, so the job is to know the ground that hides them and the hours you are most likely to encounter them.
Snakes are ambush animals. They sit where it is cool and covered: tall grass, leaf litter, brush piles, and the shaded gaps under rock, wood, pipe, and pallets. On a rig site, that is the cuttings pile, the lay-down yard, and anything that has sat still for a day. They are most active at dawn and dusk and in warm weather, which is exactly your summer start time.
The bite follows a pattern too. In the occupational data, most bites land on the hands and forearms, usually when someone reaches into a space they did not look into first. So the single habit that prevents the most bites is simple: do not put a hand or foot anywhere your eyes have not gone first.
Know the tell of a strike-ready snake. A rattlesnake can hit from a third or more of its body length, coiled or stretched out, so 'out of reach' is farther than most people think. And do not write off a small one: a juvenile's venom is just as potent as an adult's.

A California Aquifer May Have Crossed a Line It Cannot Uncross
Here is a number that should get a driller's attention. During the 2020 to 2022 drought, parts of California's Sacramento Valley sank by up to about a foot a year, as fast as the hard-hit San Joaquin Valley. A new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, from UCLA and Caltech researchers, says that fast sinking marks a shift from damage the ground can recover to damage it cannot.
When an aquifer is pumped hard, water pressure in the fine-grained layers drops and the ground compacts. Up to a point that is elastic: refill the aquifer and it springs back. Past that point the pore space collapses for good, and the aquifer permanently loses room to store water. The study found the Sacramento Valley crossed that line abruptly, and the tell was that the sinking no longer tracked water levels.
Why it matters for well work: the Sacramento Valley was not one of the basins California flagged as critically overdrafted, so this is a warning that trouble can show up where nobody zoned for it. Expect more demand for monitoring wells, subsidence instrumentation, satellite-based tracking, tighter pumping limits, and recharge projects. In a basin that has already collapsed, recharge is about the only tool left.

Part 2 of 4: Geophysical Logging for Water Wells- The Logs
Yesterday was the what and why. Today is the tool bag. A basic water-well suite usually runs a handful of logs, each reading one property, and the skill is knowing what each one sees.
The everyday set: spontaneous potential and single-point resistivity, which react to the fluids and the formation; the short and long normal resistivity logs, which read deeper to gauge how much water is in the pore space and its quality; a natural gamma log, which rises with clay and shale; a temperature log; a guard, or focused resistivity, log for sharper bed detail; and a sonic or acoustic log that times sound through the rock. Many more logs exist, but those are the basics.
Read plainly: gamma finds the clay, because clay is naturally more radioactive than clean sand and gravel. Resistivity separates coarse water-bearing zones from tight clay, and because dissolved solids lower resistivity, it also hints at water quality. A caliper, when it is run, measures hole diameter to flag fracture zones, washouts, and where casing will seat.
You do not need to own the tools. Most drillers bring in an independent wireline logging service to run the suite, and the gear ranges from portable, trailer-mounted water-well systems up to the high-resolution image logs of the oilfield service companies. The right answer is the suite that answers your question, not the longest tool string.
