Welcome to the Friday Edition of The Daily Drop.

Fridays are a little different around here. Our Safety Focus shifts from the job site to the personal health and well-being of the people doing the job.

We also share a few thoughts from the editor and close with the newest vendors and job opportunities on WaterWellResource.com.

Your Hearing on the 4th of July

Most people think about burns and eye injuries when it comes to fireworks. Fewer think about their hearing.

Here is what you need to know going into this weekend:

  • Consumer fireworks can exceed 140 decibels at close range.

  • A single close-range exposure can cause lasting damage. It can happen instantly and without warning.

  • A simple pair of foam earplugs provides significant protection. They are inexpensive, they fit in your pocket, and they work.

This matters especially for those already working in high-noise environments. Your hearing is already under strain from drill rigs, compressors, generators, and banging steel.

Protect what you have.

Notes From the Editor

Tomorrow, we celebrate America turning 250 years old.

That is two and a half centuries of freedom, opportunity, and the kind of life that most of the world can only dream about. That is worth stopping to appreciate.

In case you like little nuggets of history as much as I do, here is one you can share at your barbecue Saturday: The Continental Congress voted to approve American independence on July 2, adopted the Declaration’s text on July 4, but most delegates did not sign the formal document until August 2, 1776.

But let’s not allow a few details to derail the awesomeness of the Fourth of July.

This weekend, most of America will gather with family and friends to celebrate. But not everyone gets that luxury.

Today, tomorrow, and every other day of the year, men and women serving overseas will mark the holiday far from home. Even here at home, first responders will spend the Fourth answering calls instead of watching fireworks.

And yes, water well crews will show up at the job site as scheduled, because the rig has to keep “turning to the right.”

To all of them, thank you.

The freedoms and comforts we celebrate this weekend exist because people are willing to sacrifice their own comfort to serve something bigger than themselves.

That spirit is not limited to the military or the badge. It shows up every day in the people who build and maintain the infrastructure that keeps this country running, including the clean, reliable water that many Americans will take for granted this holiday weekend.

I try to live with an attitude of gratitude.

Today, that means being grateful for the country we live in, the industry we serve, and the people we get to work with.

This is a good life. We are doing meaningful work. And we get to do it in the greatest country on earth.

Enjoy the Fourth. But do it safely.

And if you are working this weekend, know that it does not go unnoticed.

Next Week on The Daily Drop

The Heat is Not Done With Us Yet

This week, we talked about what heat does to your equipment.

Next week, we turn it around and talk about what heat does to you.

Monday through Thursday, our Safety Focus will address heat illness and hydration.

We will cover:

  • How the body responds to extreme heat

  • How to recognize the early warning signs before they become an emergency

  • What proper hydration on a summer job site actually looks like

  • How to build work and rest cycles that keep your crew safe when temperatures are unforgiving

This is the time of year when heat illness incidents spike, and the people most at risk are often the ones who think they are too tough to be affected.

For the Knowledge Share, we are diving into slot selection and filter-pack design.

These are two topics that sit at the heart of a well that performs the way it should, and two topics where the details matter more than most people realize.

If you have ever questioned whether you made the right call on slot size or filter-pack material, next week is for you.

The Daily Drop will be back in your inbox Monday at 5:00 a.m. EDT.
