Eye Exams: The Dilated Exam Catches What You Cannot Feel

This one ties the week together. All week, Safety Focus has been about spotting the hazard before it finds you, and your eyes are the tool you use to do that. A vision screening only reads letters on a chart; a comprehensive dilated exam looks inside the eye, where trouble shows up long before you would ever feel it, starting with glaucoma, since the optic nerve damage it causes cannot be undone once it happens.

A dilated exam does more than screen for one disease. Widening the pupil lets the doctor see the retina and the blood vessels feeding it, so the same look that catches glaucoma also catches diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, often before you notice a thing. The retina is one of the few places a doctor can see your blood vessels directly, which is why diabetes and high blood pressure tend to show up in the eye first. For a crew working long days, that is a real health check, not just a vision check.

The point is simple: do not wait for your vision to go bad to get checked. By the time you notice, the window on the easy fixes may already be closing.

Notes From the Editor

I had a great conversation over a business dinner this week. We got to talking about the ordinary things we take for granted, the ones that are just there when we reach for them. Somewhere in it, I thought about the faucet. You turn a handle, clean water comes out, and few of us think twice about it.

Here is the part worth thinking about: Around the world, about 1 in 4 people, roughly 2.1 billion, still do not have safely managed drinking water at home, and some are still drinking straight from a surface source. For a lot of the planet, water is not a handle you turn. It is a walk, a wait, and a risk.

That is the business we are in. Not the abstract version, the real one: the well you drilled, the material you installed, the pump you set, is the reason a family somewhere turns a handle and does not think twice. We talk a lot about doing the work right, being safe, and following the standards. The end result, the flowing water, this is why it matters. This is what we have the privilege and responsibility of providing to our friends, families, and those who may never think twice about where the water comes from when they turn on the tap.

So this is a thank-you to the people who do it. Our work feeds our families and builds our careers, and often times, it serves someone we will never meet. Not many trades can say both. We most certainly can.

Work hard. Work smart. Stay safe! See you all back here on Monday.
